What is a UML timing diagram?

A timing diagram is a specific behavioral modeling diagram that focuses on timing constraints. While similar to a sequence diagram, it focuses on the duration of events rather than just their order. By mapping time along the horizontal axis, you can identify latency issues, synchronization gaps, and areas where your process can be optimized for better performance.

How to create a UML timing diagram

Identify which objects or components in your system require precise timing and synchronization.

List the different conditions or “values” each object can inhabit.

Draw a horizontal axis at the bottom of your diagram to represent the passage of time. You can use absolute units, such as milliseconds, or relative segments to show the order of operations.

Draw horizontal lines to show the current state of an object. When a change occurs, use a vertical step to move to the new level. Continue the new horizontal line to represent the exact duration the object remains in that state.

Draw arrows between lifelines to illustrate the triggers for state changes. Use these messages to show how a signal from one component causes another component to shift states.

Define the timing rules for your system. Use brackets to mark constraints and observations to verify if your system meets its performance requirements.
