Before you drop a single box, decide what part of the system you are modeling. Are you showing the entire global infrastructure, or just the localized environment for a specific microservice? Identify the "Nodes": These are the hardware or execution environments (Web Servers, Database Servers, IoT Devices, Cloud Regions).

In UML, nodes are the physical objects that execute your code.

• Hardware Nodes: Physical machines like a "Dell PowerEdge Server" or an "iPhone 15."

• Execution Environments: Software that acts as a container for other software, such as "Docker Container," "JVM," or "Linux OS."

• Visual Tip: Use a 3D cube shape to represent these nodes.

Now, identify the actual software files that will live on those nodes.

• Examples: .jar files, .exe binaries, database schemas, or script files.

• The "Manifest" Relationship: If a specific artifact implements a logical component from your design, you draw a dependency line to show that the artifact "manifests" that component.

Place your artifacts inside the nodes where they will reside during runtime.

• Nesting: Literally draw the artifact box inside the node cube.

• Multiple Instances: If you have three web servers running the same API, you can either draw three cubes or one cube with a "3" in the corner to represent multiplicity.

How do these nodes talk to each other? You need to draw the "pipes" between the cubes.

• Lines: Draw solid lines between nodes that have a physical or wireless connection.

• Stereotypes: Label the lines with the protocol being used

Clean up the layout to ensure it’s readable.

• Group by Tier: Keep your Presentation Tier (Web), Logic Tier (App), and Data Tier (DB) organized vertically or horizontally.

• Add Comments: Use "Notes" (the dog-eared paper icon) to explain complex hardware specs or security constraints.
