How to make an organizational chart

This guide will walk you through the process of creating your very own org chart on the medium of your choice, and teach you how to build an org chart in Lucidchart.

Org Chart FAQs

An organizational chart shows the internal structure of an organization or company, with employees and positions represented by boxes or shapes linked by lines to show reporting relationships and hierarchy.

Organizational charts are also known as org charts, organograms, organogram charts, organigrams, organigrammes, and hierarchy charts.

The three main types are hierarchical (pyramid-shaped with clear top-down authority), matrix (where individuals have more than one manager), and flat or horizontal (with little or no middle management between top administrators and workers).

You can use org charts for organizational and supervisory communication, restructuring teams, workforce planning, resource planning to reduce inefficiencies, and even genealogy as family trees.

Org charts can quickly become outdated, especially in organizations with high turnover. They show only formal relationships and not informal or social relationships, and they don't reflect management style or how authority is actually exercised.

You can automatically create an org chart by uploading a CSV, Google Sheet, or Excel file, or use drag-and-drop shapes to build one from scratch using templates or a blank canvas.

You can add photos to help connect names and faces, use different shapes or colors to define departments or job levels, include company logos or icons, and add contact information or email links.

Online charts are easier to update than printed ones, and using a collaborative online platform like Lucidchart allows for efficient updates. In Lucidchart, updates can be automated when you sync data from Google Sheets or Excel.
